Lunar_Chick asked:

What cost effective ways are there for a small business (sole trader) to advertise? Magazine and newspaper advertising seems to be very expensive and offers low returns, so what alternatives are there?

    Word of mouth.

It all depends on your business.

    Example:

For foodstuff’s , its very good to have free tasters.

You should try your local sports teams- they would maybe let you advertise around their park/stadium for not too much.
For instance I paid £300 pounds to my local football team to have a banner up around the pitch for 3 years

word of mouth is good because thats how it will get more popular with people but also if you put on a small fete maybe at a local school or where you are based even if its your house inviting people, say theres free booze/ food get your mates 2 spread the word and then layout prospects of ur buiness around, possibly examples for them too look at or free tasters and lots of posters giving them bargains.

make some flyers or cards on your computer and post them through doors.

If you provide the customer with a good service let him be your mouthpiece. Stat’s say that if you do a good job they will tell only a few friends. If you do a bad job it gets to over 200 people.

Word of mouth is very slow! Appear in front of local clubs. Tell them about your service or what you are all about. It is free and you usually get a free lunch!

Hand out flyers. Cheap but not too effective!

Radio is the best! Depending on how you promote!

One proven way to attract more customers is
with coupon incentives. Here is a site that will
let you post your coupons for free and you only
pay when the coupon is actually redeemed

    Good Luck

How about Flyers? I have a cool link for 1000 free flyers-
Also, how about bandit signs? Those small road signs that advertise “We Buy Ugly Houses” . You can get those super cheap at Best Wishes :)

Try targeting your market, like florists or photographers would target brides in bridal magazines. There may be a local publication that you can reach your specific customers through. If you do try several different forms of advertising, then be sure to ask your customers where they heard of you, this will give you a better idea of what works best.
Best of luck to you, ;-)
